FUSD celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week from May 1-5 in acknowledgement of the amazing certificated staff across FUSD.
Some schools acknowledge both classified and certificated staff this week, while others will celebrate at a different time. At each of our schools, this much is true: FUSD has amazing educators challenging and inspiring each student, and we are grateful to each employee for sharing their professional excellence with our school communities.
FUSD will mark Classified Employees Week from May 22 to 26 to thank our classified CSEA, SEIU and FSMA employees.

FUSD named Rachel Brown its 2023 Teacher of the Year on March 22, 2023. Brown was selected from an outstanding group of nominees from FUSD schools.

“Being selected as district Teacher of the Year is such an unexpected honor, and I am so humbled and grateful to be chosen,” said Brown, who is a 4th grade teacher at Mission San Jose Elementary (MSJE), and is in her 24th year of teaching in FUSD.
In addition to Brown, the 2023 finalists included Melissa Auger from Thornton Junior High, Stephanie Keller from Mattos Elementary, Maria Dimitrova from Brier Elementary, Anjum Mujeeb from Glankler Early Learning, Jason Boyer from Parkmont Elementary, and Ida Wong from Warm Springs Elementary.

I love being in classrooms. Seeing student work on the walls, watching the engagement amongst educators and students, feeling like I am in the safe and nurturing space a teacher has created. And each classroom is unique, much like each teacher. I am grateful to each of you who have welcomed me into your domain and shown me your technique, your innovation, your passion.
This week we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in acknowledgement of the certificated staff across FUSD. Teaching so often involves an indescribable amount of generosity of spirit. Giving energy, passion and countless emotions. Sharing your professionalism and dedication.
I know your work can be exhausting, perhaps never more so than this year. Your community sees and values all you do. And we know that words of appreciation are not enough. The District will continue to work toward reaching an agreement on a successor contract with our FUDTA negotiations partners, knowing that you are vital to the success of our district.
I thank all our classified and certificated employees for all you do for our students. I’ll be back in touch later this month during Classified Employees Week to thank our classified CSEA, SEIU and FSMA employees.

Kennedy High School’s Bray Roman Named FUSD Teacher of the Year
The Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) is proud to name Kennedy High School’s Bray Roman as its 2020 ‘Teacher of the Year.’ The official announcement came at the District’s Board of Education meeting April 22nd. Roman was selected from a group of nominees representing all 42 FUSD schools.
“To receive such a high distinction among my colleagues is humbling, and leaves me reflecting on the teachers of FUSD who have sacrificed and worked relentlessly for their classes,” Roman said. “These teachers are not there for accolades, but rather for the greatness that lies within each of their students.”
Roman is a FUSD alum attending Millard Elementary, Horner Junior High, and Kennedy High School. After graduating, he attended Ohlone College and transferred to Chico State, majoring in Physical Education-Teacher Education with a minor in Health Science. Upon his graduation from Chico State, Roman became the first college graduate on both sides of his family. He furthered his education at the University of San Francisco, receiving a Master’s Degree in teaching. Now in his 16th year of teaching, Roman has spent the last four years at his alma mater in the classroom and coaching football - carrying on the legacy of his coach and mentor, Coach Pete Michaletos, who spent 46 years at Kennedy.
“Coach Mike has always been a guiding light in my family's life, and I feel great honor knowing that I can share in his experience as a professional educator,” Roman explained.
For the Teacher of the Year Award, each FUSD school nominates one teacher for consideration. In addition to Roman, finalists included Catherine Diaz-Centeno from Cabrillo Elementary, Brittany Martino-Weinhardt from Robertson High School, Erica Metz from Glankler Early Learning Center, Rochelle Oral from Fremont Adult and Continuing Education, Zahra Pelayo from Warwick Elementary, Matt Shaffer from Horner Junior High School and Keri Smith from Brier Elementary.
