School Preparedness: Fire

Be Informed

  • Fire is FAST - It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a building
  • Fire is HOT - Heat is more threatening than flames
  • Fire is DARK - Quickly produces black smoke and darkness
  • Fire is DEADLY - Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames

Make a Plan

  • Practice your Fire Escape Plan - Listen to your Teacher during drills
  • Find two ways to get out of each room
  • Do not to hide from firefighters
  • Know your meeting place outside

During Building Fire

  • Crawl low under any smoke to your exit
  • Before opening a door, feel the door - if hot keep closed
  • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll

After Event

  • Check with the fire department to make sure your building is safe
  • Conduct an inventory of damaged property

Notes: A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly fire.

Wildfires:  If there is a wildfire in the area, be ready to evacuate on short notice.

Stay Calm: approach any emergency logically (not emotionally) – rehearse calming techniques like breathing in slowly or counting to 10 to focus before action – mindfulness and controlling your fear will save lives. Try not to freeze during a high stress situation.
